Talk About Compassion

The ailing Ted Kennedy asked Obama to deliver a private letter to the pope, which Obie did. As I have said, I certainly don't regard the Kennedys as a premier example of Catholicism in this country. Yet, we can have compassion for the man as he suffers from a serious condition. Perhaps he is requesting prayers in his final years/days...and seeks some reconciliation or promises some fidelity? It is often difficult for us to realize that the possibly most shocking Catholic teaching is that of forgiveness. God's door is always open to all of us, like the prodigal son. It is difficult to be like God in our daily lives, forgiving those who harm us intentionally or not, and not to act like the righteous son as well.

May the senator find peace and reconciliation with Our Mother Church and God.

Peggy,

I've disagreed with you on a thousand things in the past (and will continue to do so, no doubt), but I want to commend you on the insight you've articulated so well in the passage below:

"It is often difficult for us to realize that the possibly most shocking Catholic teaching is that of forgiveness. God's door is always open to all of us, like the prodigal son. It is difficult to be like God in our daily lives, forgiving those who harm us intentionally or not, and not to act like the righteous son as well."

Amen to that, and may God have mercy on each one of us, sinners as we are.

Steve
